Frequently Asked Questions

How does LingoLingo work?+

Install the app and press 'start watching' to let LingoLingo show you videos that match your language level and your interests. As you watch, interactive exercises automatically pop up, to help you understand key vocabulary, grammar and the content of the video. Select any text in the transcript to translate directly in the app. Web search helps you research things that are not in a dictionary, like names or slang. You can also practice pronunciation by recording your voice and comparing it with native speakers.

How much does using LingoLingo cost?+

You can try it for free, after which a subscription is required. There is also a free trial when you sign up!

Who is behind LingoLingo?+

LingoLingo is made by me, Yunus. I'm a software engineer and language learner. I grew up speaking German and Turkish, and later studied Chinese at University of Hamburg. I'm using my language learning experience to build the tool that I wish existed when I started learning Chinese.

What is the LingoLingo Chrome extension?+

LingoLingo originally started out as a Chrome extension. It works a bit differently than the app: It requires the video to have a transcript (a.k.a subtitles), whereas the app works with any video. On YouTube.com, the extension shows a container where you can select text to translate. You can save words, which you can then export to Anki as flashcards, along with the corresponding snippet of the video. Study mode lets you review your flashcards directly in the extension, using AI-generated exercises.

What languages are supported?+

LingoLingo supports 13 languages including Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. The app interface is available in 31+ languages.

How do I get started?+

Get LingoLingo from the App Store, Google Play. Once installed, choose your target language, then press 'start watching' to start learning.

Can I use my own YouTube videos?+

Yes! You can paste any YouTube video link into LingoLingo and it will automatically generate interactive exercises, translations, and learning materials for that video. This allows you to learn with content you're already interested in watching.
