What is the HSK?
The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, Chinese Proficiency Test) is a standardized test for Chinese language proficiency. It is used to assess the Chinese language abilities of non-native speakers and it's used as the standard for Mandarin proficiency in many universities and companies in China. Therefore, the HSK level is a good indicator of the difficulty of learning materials.
How these videos are curated
The videos on this page are curated by first searching YouTube for videos in Chinese that have transcripts. A filtering pipeline then analyses various quality metrics. For instance, videos are checked to ensure they have enough Chinese content (many Chinese videos don't actually have Chinese transcripts) and sufficient subtitle coverage, as well as a minimum duration, views, and likes.
The vocabulary in each transcript is then analyzed to determine the proportion of words belonging to each HSK level. This involves comparing the transcript's vocabulary against the standard HSK word lists (old and new) as well as a comprehensive Chinese-English dictionary (CEDICT). Based on this analysis, an HSK rating is assigned to each video. The HSK rating aims to indicate that a learner at that particular level would find the content understandable, yet still encounter a manageable number of new words to facilitate learning.
